Keeping our town tidy is more than just pride – it is good business, according to Athy’s Cllr. Richard Daly.
“As Athy slipped back slightly in this year’s IBAL awards it is vitally important that all of the agencies both voluntary and statutory unite in addressing the issue. The benefits of this are many fold. Prospective business developments and prospective residents are all attracted to a town which takes pride in its appearance. In Athy we have all of the ingredients to make this a most picturesque and attractive town and should unite in perfecting it.
Over the past number of years success in the annual Tidy Towns competition has been encouraging and has been well supported by the Tidy Towns Committee, Athy Town Council, The Chamber of Commerce, RAPID and community and residents groups. This can now act as a catalyst for the future development of the town.” he said
“This is somewhere that the ordinary citizen can actively vote in favour of its town. Our River, canal, castles and Town Hall are the envy of the county and become a mecca for tourists. A community united behind making and keeping Athy the tidiest in the county could have as much economic benefit as the establishment of a small industry.
We constantly look towards outside agencies to promote the development of our town and can easily neglect something major which we could do for ourselves. Not only does uniting together to develop a very high standard of cleanliness have the economic benefit but it also helps to develop communities where people work together in a common cause.
As Spring Clean week begins we need all communities, schools, voluntary and statutory organisations to work together with pride to make Athy an example of how tidy a town can be.”
